When Art Is Life is a conference-based class with an emphasis on readings, discussions and circles. It invites participants to respond to the materials presented with collective actions, actions and gestures that are ephemeral and focused on the process. An extensive study of stories and meanings of modern art between 1850 and 1950 is also offered. Special attention is given to social and cultural changes and related developments in the history of form, technique and media. Art as a tool for joint creation of networks of joy, parenting and belonging seeks to imagine art and artistic creation as a space where topics such as friendship, illness, aging, death and dying can find space to be openly discussed.
This course studies European art from romanticism (especially Francisco Goya's work in Spain and William Blake's work in England) to modernism. In the mid-2000s Mary Ting teamed up with me to organize a series of non-professional development workshops which gave us an opportunity to hear from artists and art managers who were looking for other ways to counter a system based on production, competition and consumption. The Texas Creative Teen Academy (TCTA) is designed to help teens live new experiences, promote respect and trust, keep them out of trouble during high-risk extracurricular hours, and improve their skills in creative expression, communication, teamwork and appreciation of the arts. The trust also encourages parents and students to promote greater arts education in their local schools by providing them with a map. This course is a comprehensive study of visual arts from Africa in social and cultural contexts. As for middle schools in Central Texas school districts, most districts have more students per art teacher than state average and offer more art courses.
